The approach draws a connection with how strongly we all miss the personal communication of live performances as the pandemic rages. She applies an intimate and poignant style, banishing any lurking image of Julie Andrews belting out ‘The hills are alive…’ in a mountain meadow. “Julia Bullock strikes the most surprising and delightful note with an utterly fresh and unique version of ‘The Sound of Music’, the title song of Richard Rodgers’ and Oscar Hammerstein’s 1959 musical.

In concert, Julia has already collaborated with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester (Roderick Cox), London’s Philharmonia Orchestra (Salonen), Los Angeles Philharmonic (Dudamel), San Francisco Symphony (Salonen, Michael Tilson Thomas), New York Philharmonic (Alan Gilbert), Boston Symphony Orchestra (Nelsons), Japan’s NHK Symphony (Paavo Järvi) and the London Symphony Orchestra with Sir Simon Rattle, and in recital at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center and Boston’s Celebrity Series. Julia also appeared in the world premiere of Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones in her hometown of St Louis. Other key operatic debuts so far include San Francisco Opera in the world premiere of Girls of the Golden West, Santa Fe Opera in Doctor Atomic, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and Dutch National Opera in The Rake’s Progress, and the English National Opera, Teatro Real Madrid and Bolshoi Theatre as The Indian Queen. Next Julia takes on the title-role of Theodora at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden alongside Joyce DiDonato and Jakub Józef Orliński. Recent highlights include the staged premieres of Michel van der Aa’s Upload at the Bregenzer Festspiele and Dutch National Opera, and a recital debut at London’s Wigmore Hall. A prominent voice of social consciousness, Musical America described Julia as “an agent of change”, naming her their Artist of the Year 2021.

She was Artist-in-Residence at the New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (2018-19) and is currently Artist-in-Residence at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and a Collaborative Partner of the San Francisco Symphony.
